The word Reiki is made up of two Japanese words. Rei which means life force energy or spirit, and Ki which means energy. When combined means Universal Life Force Energy. A Reiki practitioner aims to improve the Life Force Energy within the recipient to clear any negative blockages and toxins from the body, which leads to ill health.

Universal Life Force Energy is present in everything - people, buildings, animals, trees and nature. Reiki is the oldest form of natural "hands on healing energy" known to man and the process of healing is a very individual one which happens at the given time.

The energy of the Universe has healed many situations for millions of people all over the world, and is now regarded very highly by medical doctors. Today Reiki is now widely accepted in hospitals all over the world.

Reiki has been used very successfully to enhance the sense of peace in people who are dying. Some Reiki practitioners believe it is necessary to exercise caution when treating a person with a mental illness.

The skill of Reiki is passed down from teacher to student, which everyone can learn - no special skills are required. All that is required is desire and willingness to learn.

Who is a Reiki Master?

By Kary Berthelot

An Introduction of the Master

The Master is the person who has devoted his time and energy in learning the art of healing that is known as Reiki. He studied and earned the degrees relevant to enhancing his skills in self-healing, healing others, and teaching the Reiki students. Prior to being qualified as a teacher, he has to prove himself proficient in executing all techniques in the lower degrees or levels both with mastery and efficiency and then he must move on to studying the Master Level or Master Degree.

Looking into the entirety of the Master, you will see a person who performs the healing art with due proficiency. He is the kind of an individual who is able to feel the calling along with the willingness to assume the responsibility of being a mentor, an initiator, and above all, a teacher. He is the certified person who can teach the methodologies and then attune other students into this kind of healing art.

The Master's Skills Enumerated

As the Master of Reiki teaching, he is endowed with numerous skills that have something to do with the spiritual healing. Included herein are his communication skills, the transforming, and handling of different types of emotional responses, carrying on the therapeutic figures, specializing in the teaching skills, and overcoming any resistance to perform the healing motivation. Since Reiki is comprised of various levels, the Master should be knowledgeable enough in granting his students an in-depth knowledge in every level that he handles. It is furthermore required that he is capable of teaching all the encompassing levels or degrees.

Using the Energy

The master should therefore have the rightful knowledge on the usage of the life energy. As per the Reiki theory is concerned, the energy flows towards the target. Thus, it is exhibited to where the attention of the healer is directed. The symbols play a vital role in this sense especially in the production of the energy. There are different symbols involved and they all generate the respective energy. The produced energies are later on utilized for several objectives like stress relief and stress release, healing, and in curing a myriad of problems.

The Learning Course of the Masters

There are numerous courses that help mold a Master in Reiki. Reiki itself revolves within the straightforward philosophy of self-healing prior to healing other people. A Master's first challenge is that of healing himself because it is the only way on how he will be able to heal and help other people. During the training, the student who aims to become a Master is aided in resolving his personal past issues so he can better hold the rein of his own emotions. The mind training likewise helps a lot in provoking the manifestations of his own wants.

At any rate, the Reiki Master has a spiritual power that should never be underestimated. With all the positive energies in him, he is sure to influence the outpour of positive results.

Daily Reiki Practice To Reduce The Effects Of Aging

By Dennis Barker

In this article I will describe a ten minute visualisation which I have been using for 10 years to improve my own health (physical, emotional and intellectual). The process is very simple and involves a couple of minutes of preparation followed by a short visualisation exercise.

Begin by preparing your space. Take the phone off the hook and let anyone who might have a reason to disturb you in the next ten minutes know that you wish to be undisturbed.Clear a space if necessary and place a straight backed chair in the centre of the room.

Spend a moment or two adjusting any music you may have chosen for the exercise. I recommend relaxing instumental music of approximately 7 minutes.

The visualisation begins once you are seated comfortably in the chair with your feet flat on the floor.Keep your back straight and maintain an upright posture for this exercise.Begin by imagining yourself putting down roots into the earth and feel yourself attached physically to the earth by these roots as they wrap themselves around the core of the earth. Visualise the earth giving your roots nutrients as they anchor you and nurture you.Bring up the nutrients fron the earth as you breathe first in, then out.Imagine the nutrients flowing through your bloodstream and moving around your entire circulatory system, being absorbed into the celular structure of your physical body.when you are satisfied that you have received enough nutrients begin to visualise white light spreading outwards from your physical body extending out as far as your fingers. A ball of white light glowing and pulsing with your breathing and heartbeat. The ball of light extends outwards as far as your fingertips if you were to extend your arm and hand fully.

Sit in this white light for a few moments and recognise your own ability to empower yourself with positive thoughts and emotions. If you feel any aspects of your life could improve send white light to this specific area, visualise the nutrition improving your relationships and financial status.

When you feel ready begin to focus once again on your physical body and renew your focus on the moment at hand. Slowly count your breaths from one to ten and then open your eyes if they have been closed. You may need to stretch and shake your arms to bring yourself back into the day to day life.

Discover The History Of Reiki Healing

By Yvonne Handford

The history of Reiki Healing reveals the story of magical healing energies which were rediscovered by a man named Dr Mikao Usui, a Buddhist monk in the early nineteenth century. Dr Usui found the "key" for healing using only energy and the palm of your hand. His amazing quest to find the missing "keys" of Reiki healing has now been widely spread all over the world, and used daily by millions of people..

A senior student asked Dr Usui, "Do you believe everything written in the bible?" Dr Usui answered "yes". The boy then proceeded to ask "Why does it say in the bible that we can walk on water and heal sick people, when we can't".

This was the seed that started the quest for answers and Dr Usui resigned from his position. He moved to the United States of America and received a Doctorate Degree in Scriptures.

Dr Usui knew Buddha had the power to heal, so he returned to Japan to study Buddhism.

Whilst studying Buddhism he discovered the Original Buddhist Scriptures, but unfortunately they were written in Sanskrit (an ancient language). Which he had to study before he was able to understand the teachings.

Finally, he found the formula of how Buddha miraculously healed people. He knew he was close but could still not heal people. Dr Usui went to the mountains in Japan to fast and meditate on the technique required to heal people for 21 days. His friend the Abbot warned him it could be very dangerous, and he may even loose his life.

As Dr Usui climbed the scared mountain he collected twenty one stones, that he used as a calendar. He spent his days on the mountains studying the sutras, meditating and singing. As the days passed Dr Usui became tired, stiff, hungry, thirsty and exhausted and disappointed as he was no closer to discovering how to heal the sick.

On the twenty first day as Dr Usui began to head home, then suddenly he became aware of a beautiful beam of white light shooting from the heavens directly towards him.

He was stuck by this light which eventually knocked him over, he could also see bubbles of white light before his eyes. These bubbles of light contained the energies of Reiki. He realized the missing key's of Reiki Healing had been given to him, and the missing energies or the now known symbols of Reiki healing, had been rediscovered.

Following this experience Dr Usui was no longer feeling the tiredness, stiffness, exhaustion and hunger he previously felt. On the way down the mountain he stubbed his toe which he placed his hands over and the pain and bleeding subsided. He healed himself.

When he arrived down from the mountain he stopped at an inn and ordered a Japanese breakfast. The inn keeper could see he had been through an ordeal by his clothes and appearance.

Whilst waiting for breakfast he healed the inn keeper's daughter of tooth ache. He also healed himself of aches and pains plus his friend at the Monastery the Abbot, of severe arthritic pain using only energy and his hands.

He continued to heal the poor and the beggars for many years. Eventually left the beggars and returned home to the Monastery, where he began healing and teaching students throughout Japan.

Dr Usui now realized there were two primary aspects of Reiki Healing which were vital- the healing of the spirit and the responsibility of the receiver.

Dr Usui passed the "Keys", the lineage and the history of Reiki onto 16 students including Chujiro Hyashi, Hakayo Tagata and Phyllis Furimoto who in return passed the Reiki lineage on to thousands of students, so his teachings were never lost again.

Reiki Psychic Attunement Explained

By Tamara Baruhovich

What is meant by Reiki psychic attunement? How does it happen? How is it done? These are just a few questions that go through the mind of those who first learn about this ancient healing art and its relationship to psychic abilities. This article will shed some light that will help answer those questions.

A Simple Explanation

Let's start by explaining what an attunement is. The word attunement comes from "in tune" and this refers to manipulating the energy to fine-tune or bring into balance the patient's spirit, emotions, feelings, mental processes, and physical body to create synchrony within and oneness with Life Force as a whole.

This procedure may also help in the opening and expanding of the patient's innate psychic abilities. Some advocates of Reiki emphasize that it assists in clearing the concerns that tend to clog the spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical bodies which are the cause of turmoil and disease. Moreover, the attunement process brings about the healing energies from the Life Force Energy into the being.

Although Life Force Energy is around us at all times, not every person can easily access and absorb it into their system because if the chakras are out of balance, the blocks prevent the energy to be absorbed and utilized properly.

During the course of the attunement process, all of the metaphysical and universal laws as well as the Law of Similarity and the Law of Correspondence are called for. The Law of Similarity states that if a person, object, event or condition bears any resemblance or similarity -like color, shape, action, etc.- to those of the patient, it can be used for healing purposes as if it were the person or condition itself. And the Law of Correspondence states that every component of a system retains its own characteristics but also takes on the characteristics of the system as a whole, much like a holographic image in which each piece is composed of the total sum of its parts.

These concepts are widely used in distant healing, for example, a photo of the patient is similar to and corresponds to the patient himself.

Besides Usui Reiki, other modalities like Tibetan and Karuna Reiki are used by many Masters to perform distance healing with symbols. This aids in sending the energy across space and time. As a general rule, the experience that is present when the attunement is performed requires no body of belief, faith or religion for it to work. Also, one attunement can last for a lifetime or several may be needed according to each individual circumstance.

Reiki and Psychic Ability - Clearing the Misconception

The name psychic attunement is often utilized to describe the process when a Reiki student or patient is being harmonized with Reiki Energy. It's important to make clear that while Reiki may awaken psychic abilities in the receiver, the Reiki Energy, the attunement itself or Reiki practice as a whole is not in any way a psychic phenomena since the practitioner does not make use of his mind's power in the treatment session. Simply put, Reiki is often compared to ESP, telepathy, and mind reading, but it is something quite different in concept and execution.

The term 'psychic' tends to be associated to horoscopes, divination, future tellers, and even the obscure, but this association doesn't reflect the truth. The word psychic comes from a Greek root that means "the mind of the soul." It basically refers to the perception of information without the use of the readily available and well known five senses. In this sense, we are all psychic, even though some of us may have our psychic sense more or less developed than others.

On the other hand, Reiki is the word used in describing the Life Force Energy that encompasses every living creature. "Life force" may exist through different terms and names in various cultures and countries but the entire concept remains the same: it's the energy that encompasses all.

Thus, the practitioners of Reiki are not in any way psychic, so to say. They are people who have gone through rigorous training in expanding their knowledge about life and Life Force Energy in general. They have also learned how the human physical body works from the physiological standpoint, as well as how it responds to the energy around.

Therefore, even though people refer to Reiki treatment as Reiki psychic attunement, it is important to understand that it does not fall under the category called psychic phenomena. During an attunement session, the healer senses the illness or pain when they feel warmth or vibration over one area of the patient's body while they touch or pass their hands over it. Through the attunement they can readily channel Life Force Energy to the ill area to aid in the balance of energy of that particular region, organ or system.

This in turn brings about healing. All the energy channeling is done just with the use of their bare hands, and no psychic phenomena takes place.

Not too long ago, Western Medicine was reluctant to accept Reiki as a valuable means to restore health. Fortunately, as time passes and results become impossible to deny, Reiki therapy is gaining popularity and rapidly becoming a more accepted source as an alternative methodology of complementary medicine. Reiki is also being referred to as "Energy Medicine" or "Healing Touch Medicine." After all, the power of touch has proved helpful and effective many times and with several conditions, which will only continue to aid in the recognizing and accepting Reiki as a real and valuable healing method.

By Taggart King

If you are wondering what Reiki is all about, here would be a good place to start.

Imagine that you have gone along to a Natural Healing Exhibition and you are going to sit in on a talk about Reiki. You will find out what Reiki is and where it comes from. You will discover what it is like to give and receive a treatment. You will hear about the effects of Reiki treatments and come to understand how being attuned to Reiki can change your life.

So, get yourself comfortable in your chair, and let's listen in on the talk.

--------------------------------------------------
Welcome
--------------------------------------------------

Hello and welcome to an introductory talk about Reiki. My name is Taggart King, from Reiki Evolution, and I am a Reiki Master, which just means that I can teach Reiki. Over the next half an hour or so, we are going to be talking about lots of different things to do with the 'Usui system of Natural healing', as Reiki is also known. Reiki has the potential to bring
some wonderful changes to you and the people around you, so if anything we say strikes a chord with you, if you can see yourself making Reiki a part of your life, if you feel that this is the right direction for you. then do get
in contact with us later and we can maybe take things further.

To start off with, we'll talk a little bit about what Reiki is and where it comes from. Then we'll move on to find out what it's like to give and receive Reiki. We'll find out what Reiki can do for you whether you have a course of treatments or whether you decide to learn Reiki for yourself. And
finally, you can hear all about using Reiki to treat yourself, and Reiki as a spiritual practice.

--------------------------------------------------
What is Reiki?
--------------------------------------------------

Well, in the way that it is presented in the West, Reiki is a bit like a Japanese version of spiritual healing, though it has completely different origins. A man called Mikao Usui was responsible for developing it, he was a Tendai Buddhist, born in 1865 and died in 1926. Reiki is based on Channelling energy, working with energy. The energy is quite often called
chi, which is the energy that underlies oriental medicine, so when you practise acupuncture and you use needles to encourage energy to flow through a person's meridians, you are working with the same energy that you channel when you practice Reiki. If we think of Tai Chi, the energy cultivation
technique, where the various graceful movements that you make serve to build up your body's personal reserves of energy, you are again talking about the energy that you channel when you practice Reiki. You could call the energy prana, the energy that you work with when you practice yoga, but it's the
same stuff. Now, from the Oriental point of view, chi doesn't just flow through us, but it surrounds and engulfs us too, so you'll have heard of feng shui, where you arrange your living environment to allow the better flow of chi through your household. So when you practice Reiki you are
connecting to and channelling an external source of chi that flows through you into the person you are treating. And you can also connect to and use the energy for your own personal benefit.

But this isn't the only way that the energy is viewed. Many people prefer to see the energy as having divine origins, and they see the channelling of Reiki as drawing down divine light or divine love. This ties in more with the point of view of conventional spiritual healers, who draw down divine
light. And because Reiki is not attached to or allied to any particular religious belief, it should be acceptable to all people whether they have no religious beliefs or very strongly held beliefs.

So is Reiki chi, or is it divine light. well it seems to be a bit of both:
Reiki is spiritual chi.

--------------------------------------------------
Where does Reiki come from?
--------------------------------------------------

A Japanese-American lady called Hawayo Takata introduced Reiki to the West in the 1930s. And when she started teaching it, it was probably the worst time in human history to be teaching a Japanese healing technique in America, with thoughts of Pearl Harbour still fresh in everyone's minds, and the population generally hating and despising anything to do with Japan.
Along comes Mrs Takata to teach Reiki, and so she felt prompted to put together a story about the history of Reiki to make it acceptable to a potentially hostile American public. So out goes Mikao Usui the Tendai Buddhist, and in comes Dr Mikao Usui, Christian theologian, and we were told a story about him travelling the world, studying theology at various
universities, to try and find out about the healing powers that Jesus displayed. This was said to culminate with a 21-day period of fasting and meditating on the top of Mount Kurama, near Kyoto, when Usui saw symbols in bubbles of light, and Reiki was born. Unfortunately most of this story is complete fabrication, put together for good reasons no doubt, but we can
move on from this story now. The real history of Reiki is a lot more interesting and makes a lot more sense.

Usui's Reiki is rooted in lots of existing Oriental traditions that were carrying on in Japan in Usui's time. Reiki draws on Martial arts and energy cultivation techniques, and Usui Sensei was well versed in both these disciplines. Reiki draws on an ancient tradition of Japanese Palm Healing,
called teate. It uses empowerments (connection rituals) coming from Tendai Buddhism - a mystical form of Buddhism that's practiced in Japan - and involves ways of controlling the energy that come from Shintoism, the indigenous religion of Japan. So Reiki isn't new, though Usui Sensei does seem to have put together different existing traditions in a new way. He
does seem to have had some 'moment of enlightenment' after a long period of fasting and meditating on Mount Kurama, and this moment of enlightenment does seem to have contributed in some way to the development of Reiki. But he didn't go up a mountain and come down with Reiki, as we were first told.
His various studies and experiences culminated in the development of Reiki, but it was rooted in existing tradition.

Usui also did not develop Reiki in isolation. He was a member of what you might call a group of spiritually advanced people, all of whom were going in different directions but were keeping in contact with each other, swapping ideas, sharing experiences. He was good friends with a man called Ueshiba who developed Aikido, he was in contact with a man called Deguchi who was responsible for developing a new religion called Omoto kyo, there are even
connections between Usui and the people who developed the spiritual system called Johrei. So Usui was one of a group of people who were all developing energetic and spiritual methods, which crystallised and as Reiki, a spiritual path / healing technique, as Aikido, a very spiritual and compassionate martial art, and in a new religion based on the use of ancient
Shinto mantras.

Whereas Usui's Reiki was a path to enlightenment, with healing others as a part of what you did along that path, in the West we have been presented with Reiki basically as a treatment technique. This is because of a historical quirk. One of Mikao Usui's students was a man called Dr Hayashi,
a retired surgeon commander from the Imperial navy, a Christian. Dr Hayashi wasn't so interested in the 'spiritual path' side of Reiki, and he concentrated on Reiki as a treatment technique. Dr Hayashi taught Mrs Takata, and Mrs Takata brought Reiki to the West.

It is only in the last few years that Western Reiki people have had a chance to find out what Usui's original system was all about, so this is a very exciting time to get involved in Reiki! For the first time we now have a chance to follow more the system that Usui set down, rather than the
unrepresentative version that came through Dr Hayashi and Mrs Takata. This more traditional way of practicing Reiki is part and parcel of the courses that we run at Reiki Evolution. It 'fills the gaps' that there are in Western
Reiki.

--------------------------------------------------
What is it like to give and receive Reiki?
--------------------------------------------------

Well, if we talk about being on the receiving end of a Reiki treatment first, while it can vary a great deal from one person to another in terms of what they feel when they're having a treatment, you can generalise about the sort of things that most people will notice. The 'big three' sensations when
receiving Reiki are (1) deep relaxation, (2) heat from the practitioner's hands, and (3) seeing colours.

Reiki treatments make you relaxed: deeply, deeply relaxed. Most people who receive Reiki end up drifting in and out of consciousness, they lose track of time and sometimes an hour on the treatment table can feel like only 15 minutes. Some people - particularly men - seem to fall asleep completely.
It's very common for people to feel a lot of heat from the practitioner's hands, sometimes really intense heat. heat so intense that it's simply not possible for hands to get that hot. It seems that the body can't feel the energy in a distinctive way, and the best approximation it can come up with
is to feel the energy as heat. Another common experience is to see colours against your closed eyelids as you are being treated. Sometimes a random rainbow light show, sometimes colours that change depending on what hand-position is being used. It is quite common to see blue, lilac, violet,
purple.

Now those three experiences: deep relaxation, heat from your hands, sometimes seeing colours, seem to be about the limit if men's experience of Reiki, assuming they can stay awake long enough to notice them! All the more subtle sensations seem to be noticed by women, though of course I am generalising here.

So what's it like to give a Reiki treatment, then? Well most Reiki people will feel either heat or tingling in their hands as the energy flows; some people feel a bit of both. Some people have heat as their main sensation, and if a lot of energy comes through then they start to feel tingles; some
people have tingles as their main sensation and if a lot of energy comes through then they start to feel heat. Tingling isn't so much like pins & needles, but more of a fine 'fizzing' in your hands. There is a whole range of different feelings you can have though: throbbing, pulsing, heaviness,
magnetic feelings, coolness, or even a breeze blowing under your hand.

Giving a Reiki treatment is a lovely experience. Particularly if there's a lot of energy coming through, you can really 'merge' with the energy. Your mind empties of its own accord and it turns into a beautiful meditation. And because you're not giving out your own energy, you aren't depleted or drained at all at the end of the session. In fact you get some benefit from
the Reiki that has come through you, so you'll feel so calm and content. It's a lovely experience.

--------------------------------------------------
What Can Reiki Do for You?
--------------------------------------------------

One thing that Reiki seems to do for most people, whether they've come for a course of treatments, or have learned Reiki for themselves, is to produce what I call 'the Reiki effect': Reiki helps you to feel more calm, content,
serene, it helps you to feel more positive, better able to cope, and you're not so affected by stressful people and stressful situations. So people might come for a treatment with everything from depression to a pain in their big toe. and they all go away feeling more calm and content, more positive, better able to cope, less stressed. and this effect is also something that you should start to notice once you've been attuned to the
energy. Not necessarily a great big overnight transformation, but usually something that builds up in you gradually, or perhaps it is something that you start to notice with hindsight. You realise that you are thinking and feeling about things differently, or maybe your family and friends start to
comment that you seem to be less stressed, less bothered by things.

If you read books about Reiki, or look up Reiki on the Internet, you'll keep on reading that 'Reiki changed my life', 'Reiki changed my life'. And the way that Reiki seems to do this is by giving you a sense of clarity. It helps you to cut through all the rubbish that surrounds people's lives nowadays and focus on the things that are really important to you, your real
priorities. and for some people the first stage of that can be to work out what your real priorities actually are. The energy seems to give you a 'kick up the backside' and helps you to make some changes if you need to, to get your life more in line with what's really important to you.

Sometimes the energy can make you dissatisfied for a while. You doubt your job, you doubt your relationships, you look carefully at different areas of your life. and sometimes you may decide that yes, you are happy with that, yes, you are going in a direction that feels right for you, but sometimes
you may make some changes, and Reiki seems to give you the strength to do that too.

For a few weeks after being attuned you may have a bit of a rough ride. You may have some emotional ups and downs, up and down like a yo-yo. you may feel dissatisfied with things, you may have some physical symptoms coming to the surface like a cold or some headaches. The energy can get to you all the
time, and it is starting to bring things into balance, and part of the process of bringing things into balance involves releasing things: thoughts, emotions, physical things.

Health benefits can come from simply being attuned to the energy, without having had any treatments at all. For example, some people I've attuned have found that long-term painful conditions have partially or completely resolved: the pain of scoliosis, plantar fasciitis, long-term back pain.
Reiki will gently work on you in the background once you've been attuned, and you can increase the beneficial effects by focusing Reiki on yourself in different ways.

In terms of treatments, there's no proper scientific evidence to back up claims about the effectiveness of Reiki. They haven't taken a big group of people with arthritis, say, split them into two groups, with half of them being treated by Reiki people, and half of them being treated by 'pretend' Reiki people, and comparing the results. There's nothing like that as far as
I can see, so most of the evidence is anecdotal, and as far as Western science is concerned, that isn't enough. So although anecdotally Reiki has done some amazing and incredible things, even in very serious and life-threatening conditions, there's very little 'proper' scientific evidence to back up such claims.

So when I talk to people about the effects of Reiki, I talk about my personal experience of treating people, and I have found that Reiki has produced some amazing results: with long-term pain, stress, low energy levels, sleeplessness, with emotional blocks and long-term emotional issues.
all those unresolved things that we keep well hidden, all that stuff that is grinding away under the surface that we don't want to deal with. Reiki takes the lid off these things and allows us to release them, and that allows us to move forward. Reiki works on all levels. It deals with physical problems;
it works on the mental and emotional levels too. It takes a person as a whole and helps to bring them into balance.

So you can share your Reiki with your family members, you will be able to make a real difference to their lives by treating them, and you will benefit from the treatments that you give too. What a wonderful gift we have in Reiki.

--------------------------------------------------
How Do You Learn Reiki?
--------------------------------------------------

The strange thing about Reiki is that although you can find out it by reading books, you can't actually 'do' Reiki until you've been 'tuned in' by a Reiki Master (teacher). The Reiki 'attunement' connects you permanently to the source of energy, and once you're attuned then the ability will never
leave you. You don't have to be a very spiritual person to learn Reiki, you don't even have to believe in it. You simply need to go on a course and it will work for you. Isn't that wonderful?

People notice many different things when they are attuned. Some people feel very little; others have profound experiences. But what you notice when being attuned isn't a guide to how well the attunement has 'taken': Reiki works for everyone.

Reiki is taught at different levels: you start with first Degree and then after a while you move on to Second Degree. This can be seen as 'practitioner' level. We do not recommend that you take Reiki first and second degree over consecutive days, because we believe that you need to have a chance to put Reiki into practice for a while. You need to do some self-treatments, and you need to get your hands on some real people so that
you feel comfortable with treating before you move on to the next level. You also need to give yourself a chance to get to grips with the new energy that you are connected to, and let everything settle down a bit before moving on.
Most people nowadays go on to take Second Degree level, and then a few might decide to move on to Mastership.

When you become a Reiki Master, one of the things you learn is how to connect others to Reiki. To be able to pass on Reiki to others is a wonderful gift. And Mastership isn't a final destination: it's just the first step on an exciting journey! You can't become a Master of anything by going on a two-day course, so real Mastery comes through dedication and
practice.

Making Reiki Part of Your Life
--------------------------------------------------

Once you've been attuned to Reiki the ability never leaves you, but how clear a channel you are for the energy depends on how regularly you use it. Reiki isn't something that you just learn about: Reiki is something that you practice. Now the best way to make sure that you're going to be a strong channel for Reiki is to carry out energy exercises every day for 10-15
minutes. We teach you energy exercises called Hatsu Rei Ho, which come from Japanese Reiki. As well as doing your daily energy exercises, it is a good idea to treat yourself regularly too. This will again clear your energy channels, and it will increase the beneficial effects that Reiki has on you.
Though Reiki works on you slowly and gently in the background all the time, the more you work with it, the more it will work on you.

In its original form Reiki was a path to enlightenment, and this spiritual aspect has never really left Reiki, though it is usually presented to us as a treatment technique. So for many people, Reiki helps to fill that 'spiritual void', it can help you to find your true life purpose. It can help you to feel more connected spiritually no matter what your religious beliefs might be. And because Reiki is not attached to any religion, it is not attached to any belief system, then it should not conflict with anyone's beliefs.

To finish our talk, I want to share with you a few simple 'life principles' that Mikao Usui recommended his students follow, and for me these principles encapsulate some of the beneficial changes that Reiki can bring to you.
These are his 'precepts':

Just for today do not anger,
Just for today do not worry,
Be humble,
Be honest in your dealings with people,
Be compassionate towards yourself and others

Reiki has the potential to make a wonderful difference to you and the people you care about, it can fill the spiritual void that so many people feel nowadays, and it helps to bring things into balance on all levels.

How Does Reiki Help Anxiety And Depression?

By Patsy Hamilton

How does Reiki help anxiety and depression? Scientifically speaking, we cannot explain this, just as we cannot explain how prayer works. In fact, we cannot explain why prescription drugs relieve the symptoms of anxiety and depression. We cannot explain why some people suffer nearly constantly from both, while others never do. But, as with many medical conditions and treatments, we have theories.

Anxiety and depression often accompany each other. At times, it is hard to say which came first. The symptoms of anxiety often include insomnia, irritability, unreasonable fear, heart palpitations and chest pain. These symptoms may be brought on by short or long-term stress, too much caffeine or other stimulants, improper diet or lack of exercise. These and other factors are described below.

The common symptoms of depression include insomnia or increased need for sleep, fatigue, loss of interest in hobbies or life in general, unreasonable sadness, crying, angry outbursts, suicidal thoughts, etc. Both can be disabling and are major risk factors for life-threatening diseases, though we do not really know why.

In both anxiety and depression, a “sense of well-being” is missing. This may be one answer to how does Reiki help anxiety and depression; by restoring a sense of well-being.

Treating Anxiety and Depression

The first line of treatment in most cases of moderate to severe anxiety and/or depression is anti-depressant drugs, but they do not “cure” the conditions. There is no evidence supporting the safety of long-term use of these drugs. Most practitioners will recommend a complete treatment plan, which takes time and effort, but is well worth it.

Nutrition and physical activity are both factors in anxiety and depression. Numerous research studies support the effectiveness of regular physical exercise in relieving symptoms. Just as we have no clear answer to how does Reiki help anxiety and depression, we cannot say absolutely why physical activity helps. We believe that the body produces endorphins and other compounds during physical activity that promote relaxation and a “sense of well being”.

As for nutrition, B-complex vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids are particularly important to people who suffer from anxiety and/or depression. Scientific studies support this statement, as well. It can also be beneficial to find a sense of purpose in one’s life.

How Does Reiki Help Anxiety and Depression?

Most experts agree that spirituality is important for dealing with anxiety or depression. For those of us who are not affiliated with an organized religion, finding spirituality may be a difficult task.

Many people who come to distrust the religion that they grew up with are left in a depressed state. Studying Reiki can provide the spirituality that they need. It is comforting to learn that you are not alone in the universe. This realization alone can be enough to relax the mind.

Most people who suffer from anxiety or depression need some amount of psychological therapy, maybe to find issues that they have not “dealt” with. Reiki and the use of the healing chakras provide a different way of dealing with past issues.

So, how does Reiki help anxiety and depression? It allows people to “let go” of worry, anger and past hurts. It is a method of deep relaxation that can provide the “sense of well being” and the sense of purpose that many people find missing in their lives.

Reiki Misconceptions- Top 5 Myths

By Philameana Lila Desy

When Reiki was first introduced to Canada and the United States in the 1970s it was cloaked in mystery. Hawayo Takata, a Hawaii native of Japanese descent, brought her knowledge of Reiki to the mainland through oral teachings. She insisted that the teachings not be written down because of the powerful nature of Reiki could be misused if gotten into the wrong hands. Usui Reiki teachings and stories were passed down from teacher to student by word of mouth for several years. No wonder the stories got jumbled up! For the record, Mrs. Takata is widely respected in the Reiki community and is credited for introducing the world at large to the spiritual art called Reiki. But, research has proven that some of her teachings were inaccurate.

Reiki Myths

Myth #1: Reiki is a Religion
Reiki absolutely is a spiritual art. The principle teachings of Reiki embrace a life of balance and promotes spiritual growth. But, Reiki is not a religion, nor is it based in any particular religious doctrine. Reiki does not infringe on anyone's beliefs or personal values. People of many different faiths have discovered the love-energies Reiki offers.

Myth #2: Dr. Usui was a Christian Monk

The founder of the Usui System of Reiki, Dr. Mikao (Mikaomi) Usui, was not a monk, a Christian, or a medical doctor. He was a Japanese Zen Buddhist, a businessman, spiritualist, and scholar. Late in his life, he experienced a profound spiritual enlightenment after a period of fasting and meditation. Afterwards he began the process of developing the healing art of Reiki and opened a teaching clinic in Japan.

Myth #3: Having a Reiki Attunement Will Open Up a Dialog with Your Spirit Guide

Ahhh... the lure to get a Reiki attunement with the promise of a glimpse into the spirit world. Please don't fall for this. This myth may have arisen out of the writings from Diane Stein. In her widely published book Essential Reiki, Diane describes how many of her students became aware of who their guides were after months of using Reiki following their level II attunements. The urban legend that followed was that the attunement alone would make this happen. Some Reiki II classes include a promise to "Meet your Guides." Yes, it could happen and likely has happened for some Reiki initiates, but there is no guarantee. This promise could set you up for a big disappointment. Hoping for a meeting with your guides or angels should not be the sole reason for signing up to take a Reiki class.

Myth #4: Reiki is a Massage Therapy

Reiki is NOT a massage therapy. Although there are many massage therapists who will incorporate the use of Reiki's healing energies into their massage sessions. Reiki is an energy-based therapy that does not involve manipulating bones or tissues. Reiki practitioners use a light touch with their hands on their clients' bodies or will hover their palms over them.

Myth #5: Giving Reiki to Others Depletes Your Own Energy.

A Reiki practitioner does not give his personal energy over to the client. He serves as a channel, funneling Universal Life Energy through his body to the recipient. Much like the delivery boy delivering a package on your doorstep. The Reiki package is delivered, the delivery boy goes home fully intact. Ki energies are infinite and never run out. This does not mean that a person giving Reiki may not feel tired after giving a treatment to someone. This sometimes happens and Reiki has been wrongly blamed for it. If a person giving a treatment experiences exhaustion during or after applying Reiki to others, this is likely an indication that something is out-of-balance in his own body or life that needs attention. Booking a healing session for himself with another practitioner or conducting self-treatments would be warranted.

Reiki FAQ

By Philameana Lila Desy

What is Reiki?
Reiki is a natural healing system designed to assist in healing and help achieve balance. Reiki is administered by a practitioner, who serves as a conduit through whom the Universal Life Energy can be transmitted to the recipient, by either hands-on or distance healing techniques. Practitioners may also practice Reiki self-treatments.

How does Reiki energy flow?
Reiki flows through our palms at different rates of speed, depending on various factors such as the extent of the recipient’s illness, degree of blockage, his or her readiness to accept change, and so on.

Is Reiki a form of faith healing?
No, Reiki is not a religion, nor is it based on the acceptance of any religious doctrine. Having a belief system is not a requirement for Reiki to work. Reiki does not infringe on anyone’s right to believe what he or she wishes. However, Reiki's principles are spiritual in nature and do encourage spiritual empowerment and growth.

Who can benefit from a Reiki treatment?
Reiki's gift of increased energy and vitality can be extended to anyone. It doesn't matter what a person's gender, race, intelligence, or financial status is. Reiki is not a healing energy reserved only for the elite, wealthy, educated, or spiritually evolved.

What does Reiki feel like?
Common Reiki sensations are heat or coolness, "pins and needles" tingling, vibrational buzzing, electrical sparks, numbness, throbbing, itchiness, and drowsiness.

What is a Reiki attunement?
A Reiki attunement is a ritual performed by a Reiki Master. The ritual involves energetic placement of Reiki symbols through a specific set of sequenced actions into the student's crown and palms.

Will Reiki ever run out?
When you are giving a Reiki treatment to someone, you are giving of your time and your intent to assist, but you are not giving away any of your own energy. Reiki is in infinite supply. It never runs out.

What is the purpose of the Reiki hand placements?
Emphasis is placed on devoting five minutes on each hand placement so that no part of the body is neglected and to ensure that each body part is given equal consideration.

Do I need to direct the flow of Reiki?
Reiki will automatically go to wherever it needs to go with no mental involvement of either the practitioner or the recipient. However, when mental intention is used, a linear pathway is opened. This cleared route allows Reiki to flow more effectively to that part of the body where attention is most desired.

What purpose do Reiki symbols serve?
Independently, each Reiki symbol has its own unique purposes. The combined function of these symbols is to provide Reiki practitioners with focal points for their healing intentions.

Why is Reiki called "smart energy"?
Reiki is an intelligent energy because it knows which areas of the body most need healing and will automatically flow to specific areas where suffering or imbalance are prevalent.

Reiki Healing- Introduction to Reiki And What To Expect

By Philameana Lila Desy

Reiki (pronounced Ray Key) is a combination of two Japanese words rei and ki meaning universal life energy. Reiki is an ancient laying-on of hands healing technique that uses the life force energy to heal, balancing the subtle energies within our bodies. Reiki addresses physical, emotional, mental and spiritual imbalances. This healing art is an effective delivery system. The Reiki practitioner serves as a vessel that supplies healing energies where they are most needed. Reiki's ki-energies flow out of the practitioner's body through the palms of the hands while they are touching the recipient's body.

What to Expect During a Reiki Healing Session
You will be asked to lay down on a massage table, couch, or bed. You will be fully clothed except for your shoes. You may also be asked to remove or loosen your belt so that your breathing is not restricted in any way. It is best to choose loose-fitting garments to wear on the day of your appointment. Wearing natural fabrics is best (cotton, wool, or linen). You may also be asked to remove any jewellery (rings, bracelets, pendants, etc.) prior to the session, so consider leaving these items at home.

Relaxing Atmosphere
Reiki practitioners will often create a relaxing atmosphere for their Reiki sessions, setting the mood with the use of dimmed lights, meditative music, or bubbling water fountains. Some practitioners prefer to be in a place that is completely silent, without distraction of music of any kind, to conduct their Reiki sessions in.

Healing Touch
During the Reiki healing session the practitioner will place his hands lightly on different parts of your body. Some Reiki practitioners will follow a predetermined sequence of hand placements, allowing their hands to rest on each body placement for 2 to 5 minutes before moving on to the next. Empathic practitioners will freely move their hands in no particular order to the areas where they "feel" Reiki is most needed. Some Reiki practitioners do not actually touch their clients. Instead, they will hover their lifted palms a few inches above the reclined body. Either way, Reiki energies flow where they are suppose to. Reiki is a smart energy that automatically flows where the imbalances are in your body regardless of where the practitioner's hands are placed.

Phantom Hands
Because Reiki energies flow to where they are most needed there is a Reiki phenomenon called "phantom hands" that you may or may not experience. Phantom hands feel as if the Reiki practitioner's hands are touching one part of your body when they are actually elsewhere. For example, you may be able to see that the healer's hands are actually placed on your stomach, but you could swear that hands are touching your legs. Or, you may feel as if several pairs of hands are on your body at the same time as if several people are in the room with you.

Booking a Reiki Healing Session
You may have turned to the yellow pages of your telephone directory in search of a Reiki practitioner in your area. However, very few practitioners advertise their services using this media. Reiki practitioners work out of clinics, hospitals, spas, and home businesses. Some practitioners provide house-calls, traveling to your location to give treatments. Check out bulletin board postings in natural food markets, metaphysical stores, yoga classes, community colleges, etc. Reiki practitioners often rely on word of mouth from their regular clients in attracting new ones.

There are many different types of Reiki systems, so be sure to ask any questions you may have about a practitioner’s services before you book a session. Reiki shares are sometimes used as a promotional tool to introduce Reiki in their areas. Shares are usually offered peridodically on weekends for free or at a minimal price.

Becoming a Reiki Practitioner
Reiki is traditionally taught in three levels. Levels I and II are typically taught in one day class (8 hours) or over a weekend period (16 hours). Level III is generally a more intensive course of study and will take a longer commitment. Class time involves an initiation ritual called an attunement and learning the hand placements for self treatments as well as treating others.

Reiki Controversies and Myths
The healing community has come a long way in demystifying the cloak of secrecy that once surrounded the teaching of Reiki in the western hemisphere. As a result, inaccuracies that were born out of the teaching being hidden away have been chipped away layer by layer. However, some of these Reiki Myths continue to grow organically.

Reiki was first introduced to Canada and the United States in the 1970s. Hawayo Takata, a Hawaii native of Japanese descent, brought her knowledge of Reiki to the mainland through oral teachings. Reiki teachings and stories were passed down from teacher to student by word of mouth for several years. No wonder the stories got jumbled up!

There is a continuing argument about publicizing the symbols used in Reiki. They have been talked about as being sacred and powerful and should not be shared outside of the Reiki community. Yet, the symbols are printed in several publications and widely distributed across the Internet. What may have been kept for secret for awhile is no longer. I personally do not believe the symbols have power in of themselves, but that the power they represent is actually the intention or focus held by the Reiki practitioner when they are being used.

How Reiki Differs From Massage

By Laura Bruno

In states in the USA that do not explicitly exempt Reiki from jurisdiction by the Massage Board, Reiki sometimes raises the ire of people who would prefer to have it regulated. Reasons can range from conservative religious groups looking for ways to minimize the proliferation of alternative spirituality, to massage therapists wanting to eliminate competition from those with less formal training, to a misunderstanding of what Reiki actually is. I offer this article as a starting point for people trying to understand the differences between Reiki and Massage.

This list also serves as a starting point for anyone creating a petition targeted to a particular state's definition of massage. (Be sure to check your state's actual definition when writing such a petition.) In a world of increased regulation, it's important to practice Reiki both responsibly and freely.

The "Rei" in Reiki stands for "universal" or" spiritual," and the "ki" corresponds to the "life force energy" known as "Chi" or "prana" in other Eastern systems of healing and energy work such as feng shui, Tai Chi, Qigong, or yoga. Thus, Reiki refers to "universal life force energy," "divinely directed healing energy," or "life energy of a spiritual nature," with an emphasis on subtle energy fields rather than the physical body. For the following reasons, we do not believe Reiki fits the legal definition of massage:

1) Massage is primarily physical, but Reiki works with subtle energy fields surrounding the body. Although some massage therapists may draw upon Reiki energy while giving massages, a traditional Reiki treatment involves 11 to 14 stationary, non-pressured hand positions held for 3 to 5 minutes each. Whereas massage involves the manipulation of tissue, Reiki requires only a light, non-invasive touch or no touch at all. Reiki Level 2 students learn how to perform Reiki treatments at a distance without requiring someone's physical proximity, but it would be impossible to give a massage without a body in the same room. Reiki is akin to "the spiritual laying on of hands" or "healing prayer," rather than a massage modality or technique.

2) In order to provide effective massage, massage therapists need knowledge of anatomy and physiology, along with various massage strokes like "Effleurage," "Petrissage," "Tapotement," etc. By contrast, Reiki students learn that universal life force energy has innate intelligence and knows where it needs to go. Reiki practitioners do not manipulate the body or forcefully direct energy during a Reiki treatment. In order to practice Reiki, the practitioners must receive an attunement or initiation from a Certified Reiki Master Teacher. The attunement opens the students' own natural energy channels, allowing Reiki energy to flow through their hands. The traditional Reiki hand positions and any other Reiki process do not require massage education in order to be effective.

3) In addition to the aforementioned differences, preparations for receiving Reiki or massage are different. Before receiving a massage, most patients disrobe and then have lotions rubbed into their nude or semi-nude body, draped under a sheet. By contrast, recipients of Reiki always remain clothed, and Reiki treatments do not involve the use of lotions or crèmes.

4) The American Cancer Association makes a distinction between massage and Reiki when recommending complementary therapies. According to the ACA, "Manipulation of a bone in an area of cancer metastasis could result in a bone fracture. Also, people who have had radiation may find even light touch on the treatment area to be uncomfortable. ... People receiving radiation treatment should not have lotion or oil used on the areas on which radiation was used. Even without radiation treatment, a few people have allergic reactions to oils used during massage. ... Another concern for people with cancer is that tissue manipulation in the area of a tumor might increase the risk that cancer cells might travel to other parts of the body. It may be prudent for cancer patients to avoid massage near tumors and lumps that may be cancerous until this question is clearly answered." By contrast, the ACA considers Reiki a "safe" treatment for cancer patients, noting that "Reiki involves very light touch or no touch."

5) The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) at the National Institutes of Health lists Reiki under "Energy Therapies", which are "intended to affect the energy fields that surround and penetrate the human body." As defined by the NCCAM, "Reiki is based on the belief that by channeling spiritual energy through the practitioner, the spirit is healed, and it in turn heals the physical body." Massage is listed under a distinctly separate category, namely, the "Manipulative and Body-Based Methods", which NCCAM defines as "methods that are based on manipulation and/or movement of the body", wherein "massage therapists manipulate the soft tissues of the body to normalize those tissues."

6) At least twenty U.S. states explicitly exempt Reiki from massage regulation.

Reiki Energy Healing

By Stephanie Lana Taylor

REIKI is on the most ancient healing methods known to man. It originated in Tibet and was reintroduced in the nineteenth century by the Japanese monk Dr. Mikao Usui.

Reiki is mentioned in 2500-year-old writings in Sanskrit, the ancient Indian language. The Usai system is named after Dr. Usai and it has been passed down to Reiki masters since that time and is now practiced worldwide.

We humans have Universal Life Energy all around us and within us. This life force energy is given to us at birth and we use it up in the business of ordinary daily living. We have to create a daily supply of new energy when we are unable to for a prolonged period, we may become physically or emotionally ill. If our supply of this life force energy is very low and depleted, we suffer from all sorts of physical, emotional and mental disorders.

WHAT IS REIKI

Reiki is a natural and simple healing method, which allows a person to absorb more life force energy. The system vitalizes your life force by balancing the energies in the body. This natural energy flows in a powerful and concentrated form through the hands of the Reiki healer. The Reiki healer lays hands on the various chakras, energy channels, there are seven main energy channels, and balancing these centers will bring the body back into harmony. Once balance is restored the body can start to heal from within.

Stress is generally thought to be the reaction to the demands of daily life. If you cannot cope with these demands you may react with physical, emotional and mental symptoms. If you suffer stress over a long period of time, the body loses vitality, resilience and you become susceptible to illnesses. The stress mounts up this accumulation leads to continuing disturbances in the physical-spiritual area.

Reiki helps you to experience your anger, fears or feelings of guilt and helps you 'let go' of the negativity bringing about harmony and positive emotions.

The Reiki treatment hand positions correspond with the body's endocrine glandular system and the seven main charkas. The endocrine system regulates hormone balance and metabolism. Our seven main charkas are seated in the human etheric body. They are connected to fine energy channels running along the spine. Without them the physical body could not exist. These energy centers collect subtle energy, transform it, and supply it to the body. Each chakra is linked to a certain organ or region in the body and has influence on its functions.

Reiki can help if you are suffering from depression, stress, emotional problems, and insomnia, pain and to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy. It can also help to relax women undergoing IVF treatment making that treatment more successful.
